Abstract

We investigate the zero mode problem for the lattice Dirac equation in the background of an abelian vortex. Following Jackiw-Rossi analysis in the continuum, we include a fermion-scalar field interaction and we show that the Dirac equation for (staggered) lattice fermions possesses |N| zero eigen-value modes in the N-vortex background. Our result suggests the validity of an index theorem in a two-dimensional lattice.
