Abstract

Describes a field study on waves generated by river traffic in the Illinois and Mississippi rivers. Wave height was measured by two systems, the first a staff gauge and movie camera, the second an electronic wave gauge connected to a minicomputer. Notes the locations for the six field trips and illustrates cross sectional profiles of the study sites. Discusses the observed wave patterns, the effect of the presence of barges, and compares measured maximum wave heights with predictions from existing empirical equations. Develops an improved empirical equation. (C.J.U.)
