Abstract

Summary form only given. The authors have examined the absorption spectrum of Xe//2 Cl in the visible and UV in the absence of any foreign species. The result of the experiments is that the Xe//2 Cl (4**2 GAMMA ) absorption spectrum is considerably broader than is the Xe//2** plus profile. At 193 nm, the cross section has fallen to only 70% of its peak value at 340 nm. The spectrum also extends into the visible. It is possible that the bulk of the spectrum lying below 275 nm is due to photoionization of the excited Xe//2 Cl molecule. Photoelectron spectra in the UV are presented.
