Abstract

Efficient and effective education and training of nuclear engineering students and nuclear reactor operators are critical for the safe operation and maintenance of nuclear power plants. With an eye toward this need, we have focused on the development of 3D virtual laboratories for nuclear engineering education and training as well as to conduct virtual experiments. Recent increase in the student population in nuclear engineering programs has put strains on laboratory resources. These virtual laboratories are expected to supplement currently available resources and education and training experience. Recent focus is on the development of a 3D, interactive virtual model of the University of Illinois TRIGA reactor. This model is being developed as a tool for students and reactor operators to learn reactor operations. Current efforts are on adding interactivity in the control room model and a reactor physics model to allow users to effectively conduct virtual reactor experiments. This paper reports some recent extensions to this virtual reactor laboratory.
