Abstract
The experimental evidence that the surface of gravel-bed streams is usually coarser that the substrate is elucidated by introducing the 'surface layer', an interface surface having a grainsize composition. The grainsize composition at the interface is assumed to be different from both the transport composition and the surface composition, by related to them by certain equation. The details of the explanation is presented.
