Toward accessible authentication: Learning from people with visual impairments

Abstract

Current authentication mechanisms often pose significant challenges for people with disabilities. Drawing from a contextual inquiry study of visually impaired individuals experiences with authentication, we uncover specific difficulties that these users encounter in a wide range of authentication scenarios. These difficulties are related to web accessibility issues and limitations of assistive technologies. For instance, locating web login elements is time-consuming and error-prone for visually impaired users. We highlight the importance of accessibility in privacy and security, and share lessons learned for designing accessible authentication experiences.
