Abstract
Time dispersion characteristics of optical fibers are investigated in terms of r. m. s. of pulse width, by the aid of a simplified ray-optics technique. Near-parabolic alpha -profile fibers are thoroughly characterized and also some of the most common defects they suffer, such as the presence of a dip on axis or a sinusoidal perturbation.
