Thermal cracking performance and design of mixtures using superpave

Abstract

Superpave Levels II and III provide the mixture designer with the tools necessary to evaluate the thermal cracking performance of asphalt mixtures and to make rational decisions regarding the use of softer or modified binders in cases where performance is determined to be unacceptable. The system allows these decisions to be made on the basis of performance defined on a quantitative basis (amount of thermal cracking), which allows the user to determine not just that one material is likely to perform better than another, but also how much better performance will result from using a different material. This, of course allows the user to determine economic benefit when considering different alternatives.
