Abstract
The 'socialization' of GIS describes the increased use of GIS to manage and disseminate data about people and their characteristics, interactions, and everyday concerns. I briefly summarize the technical, political, and institutional issues raised by the increasing socialization of GIS, including concerns about privacy and confidentiality, data dissemination and analysis, population diversity, and social power and influence. I discuss how the articles in this special issue address these issues and contribute to the progressive use of GIS in the social arena.
