Abstract

A new field of study appears to be emerging that is concerned with the influence of language on mathematical problem solving. We have chosen the term problem processing for this new field. For purposes of this chapter, problem processing is defined as the study of the various ways in which language can influence problem solving. As we hope to show, language proficiency interacts with problem solving in a number of different ways.
