The Naturalistic Enthymeme and Visual Argument: Photographic Representation in the “Skull Controversy”

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

The essay studies the “skull controversy,” in which a Depression-era government photographer was accused of manipulating documentary photographs. It takes up the call for a more sophisticated analysis of visual arguments by positing the force of the “naturalistic enthymeme” in contexts where the realism of the image figures prominently.
