Abstract
Large-amplitude rain-wind-induced vibrations have been a major concern for stays of cable-stayed bridges. The mechanism of these problematic vibrations is still not fully understood. Current proposals for the mechanism of these vibrations include that it is of a vortex-induced type and a class of galloping instability. Based on full-scale measurement of stay cable vibrations, this paper attempts to present an assessment of such hypotheses and provide insight into the mechanism of rain-wind-induced vibrations.
