Abstract
The international symposium on the meaning and use of home and neighborhood, held in Sweden in 1989, from which various contributions in this book are derived, was extremely stimulating. The cozy environment of the Alvkarleby conference center, complete with its small-scale, vernacular architecture, its striking natural setting, and its aromatic, tasty meals, along with the warm friendliness of our conference hosts, contributed to a wonderful albeit temporary sense of home for all participants. The symposium provided those of us fortunate enough to attend with the opportunity to hear the state of the art research on housing symbolism around the world. And it also offered us a unique opportunity, in a small-scale setting, to critically discuss and evaluate our own work and that of our colleagues. The unconventional format of the conference, where we each met with the same group of researchers for several successive sessions, rather than rotating around through various groups, allowed for an unusually in-depth set of discussions to occur.
