Abstract

Using political and cultural history, the paper traces the influence of First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy on food and nutrition in the United States. The paper compares Jacqueline Kennedy with Eleanor Roosevelt and Michelle Obama, looks at the use of the bully pulpit of the White House by various first ladies in the 20th and 21st centuries, places this work in the context of presidential and Congressional food politics in the Eisenhower through Johnson administrations, and places Jacqueline Kennedy in the context of other important American food figures of the 1960s.
