The Cultural Context of Sexual Assault and Its Consequences Among Ethnic Minority Women

Abstract

Ethnic minority women are vulnerable to sexual assault across the life span, and they face unique challenges and barriers to recovery in the aftermath of sexual assault. In this chapter, rates of sexual assaults among African American, Latina American, Asian American and Pacific Islander, American Indian/Alaska Native, and Arab and Muslim American women are examined, and associated mental health and functional consequences are explored. The impact of cultural dynamics on women’s experience of sexual assault is reviewed, and the influence of racism and sexism is considered. Then, multicultural and feminist theoretical frameworks that can inform future work are reviewed. Finally, implications for future research, practice, and policy are provided.
