Abstract

The article reports on the first settlers of the Buckmaster site in Madison County, Illinois. The Rattan family are reported to be the first settlers who acquired land that became known as Rattan's Prairie. Available lands were acquired subject to preemption claims. Excavations were completed in the Buckmaster site and discovered sub-floor cellar and artifacts made of shell, ceramic, metal and glass assemblage.
