Abstract
Phase III archaeological data recovery conducted at site 13HA385 along the Iowa River in Hardin County, Iowa, in the fall of 1999 revealed the presence of two subsurface prehistoric components, designated as Components VI and VII. Component VI, located ca. 35 cm below ground surface, is a Late Archaic component containing Table Rock points. Two pit features, one post mold, and a large scatter of fire-cracked rock is associated with this component. This component yielded a radiocarbon date of 2570 RCYBP from one of the pit features. Component VII, located ca. 70 cm below ground surface, is associated with the Middle Archaic period. This component contains Tama and Raddatz points as well as numerous anvil stones, hammerstones, and fire-cracked rock. Two features, both bone grease manufacturing areas, are associated with this component. One of these features produced a radiocarbon date of 6959 RCYBP. Analysis of the lithic and archaeobotanical assemblages, as well as information pertaining to the cultural features and geomorphology of 13HA385, are presented as part of a discussion of the site's placement within the Archaic period of central Iowa.
