Abstract

The orientation of the reinforcing fibers in a short fiber composite (SFC) controls the physical and mechanical properties of the material. In this paper, two sets of even order tensors are defined which describe the distribution of the orientation of fibers in a short fiber composite. These tensor descriptors meet all the requirements and can provide convenient parameters for comparing various orientation states and also serve to describe the influence of orientation on mechanical properties on short fiber composites.
