Technique for determining ammonia equilibrium and volatilization from broiler litter

Abstract

A technique was developed to indirectly estimate broiler litter ammoniacal-N from ammonia gas measurements at the surface. The measurement technique utilized a small volume container placed over the litter, and connected via sampling lines to a photoacoustic spectroscopic analyzer. The time-history of NH3 measurements stabilize to an asymptotic value referred to as the Equilibrium NH3 Gas Concentration. Comparisons of this value were made to those values calculated using the chemical analyses of the litter. The effective rate constants are also discussed.
