Abstract

Desulfurization of (MeCp)2V2S4 with PBu3 gives (MeCp)4V4S4 (1) and (MeCp)5V5S6 (2). Compounds 1 and 2 were characterized by 1H NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. Compound 2 forms the charge-transfer salt [2] [(TCNQ)2] which was characterized by X-ray crystallography as its CH2Cl2 solvate. The cluster consists of a trigonal-bipyramidal V5 core inside of a trigonal prism of six sulfur atoms. Four-probe conductivity measurements show that [2] [(TCNQ)2] is a n-type semiconductor (Eg ≈ 0.25 eV).
