Abstract
Reduced order modelling techniques are employed to incorporate the dynamic effects of a q-axis damper winding in a lower-order synchronous machine model. Using timescale analysis of the two-axis model, it is shown that the DeMello-Concordia model is an approximation of the former under special conditions. An improved version of this model is derived which accounts for the damping provided by the amortisseur winding.
