Abstract

A sympathetic cooling of a two-ion crystal consisting of one 9 Be + and one 24 Mg + . Using 9 Be + as the cooling ion, a ground-state occupancy for the axial modes of ∼95% and better cooling results can be expected with improvements in the apparatus. As such, a model was developed which takes spontaneous emission into account and gives reasonable agreement with the experimental results.
