Stability islands for doubly charged clusters below the kinetic critical size

Abstract

We report the observation of doubly charged clusters below the kinetic critical size for Coulomb fission. Ultraviolet irradiation of cold, singly charged alkali-halide clusters efficiently generates the corresponding doubly charged clusters, allowing detection of a range of CsI and KBr clusters above and below the critical size, nc=19. These include an island of particularly high stability, n=12-13, that can be explained by computed structures. By varying the photon energy, we have also demonstrated the role of excess energy in determining fission decay rates.
