title = "Special issue on strain measurement in extreme environments",
author = "Pollak, {Randall A.} and John Lambros",
note = "Funding Information: The experimental mechanics community plays a key role in addressing these critical challenges. An international workshop on the subject was held in Glasgow in August 2012, with invited participants from China, France, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States. The event was initiated by the US Air Force (through its European Office of Aerospace Research and Development) with additional support from the professional community (British Society for Strain Measurement, Society for Experimental Mechanics and Institute of Physics) and this journal. Workshop themes were divided along two extremes – namely, high temperatures and fast measurements (e.g. high strain rates or high-frequency vibrations). This special issue contains five articles resulting from invited presentations, and one additional article along these themes. The authors have provided an excellent snapshot of the current state of the art in non-contact strain measurement at high temperatures, high strain rates, and cyclic thermal/mechanical loads. The editors trust the reader will come away significantly more informed about the possibilities for conducting experiments under extreme environments. Further, it is our hope that readers, both novices and veterans in the field, remain motivated to contribute to this exciting and challenging area of science. ",
