Abstract
This work applies finite element modelling, design sensitivity analysis and nonlinear programming to casting design. A computer simulation of the solidification process is conducted to indicate if the product will be defective. Sensitivity analyses are then performed to determine the most influential riser dimensions, and numerical optimization is used to modify these dimensions in order to obtain a defect-free casting and a minimal riser volume. A steel hammer casting is designed to exemplify the process and the results are illustrated through animation. (Authors)
