Abstract

This chapter addresses issues related to the social competence of young children with severe disabilities. We begin by describing the characteristics of children with severe disabilities. Next, we define social competence for this population and discuss components associated with social competence. Then we examine ways to assess social competence and review evidence-based interventions that enhance social competence. We conclude by making recommendations for practice and by suggesting future avenues of research that can contribute to improvements in best practices.
