Abstract

Formation of dense niobium silicide and niobium composites by field-activated pressure-assisted combustion synthesis was described. To prepare niobium silicide with or without excess niobium, pressure and electric current were affected to a graphite die containing Nb and Si powders in appropriate proportions. This method was used to simultaneously synthesize and densify monolithic materials, including nanometric phases. The availability of wide range of niobium silicides and niobium compositions allow the utilization of their material properties to specific purposes and also the formation of ductile/brittle functionally graded materials.
