Simulation modeling of sugarcane harvest-to-mill delivery systems

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

Long delays between the harvesting and milling of sugarcane lead to a loss of sucrose content and the formation of products that interfere with the milling process. Identifying the factors that contribute to these delays necessitates an investigation of the overall harvesting and delivery system integrated with the mill operation. A simulation model was developed of the sugarcane harvesting and delivery systems on the scale of a particular mill and its supply area. The purpose of the model was to study methods of reducing harvest-to-crush delays in the sugar industry. Management strategies such as using different harvesting and milling cycles and different systems of harvesting and delivery could also be investigated. The use of simulation modeling made it possible to model a complex system in whichall the Components of the harvesting and delivery system could be integrated so that a holistic view of the system could be obtained to address the interests of both growers and millers.
