Abstract

Venous blood samples were collected monthly from 60 male and 60 female Sinclair (S 1) miniature swine from 1 through 36 mth of age. Serum cholesterol concentration decreased from 5 through 36 mth of age. Also, gilts had a greater mean serum cholesterol concentration than did boars. Mean serum triglyceride concentration was greater for females than for males. From 1 through 15 mth of age, serum glucose concentration decreased with no sex related difference. From 1.5 to 3 yr of age, gilts had greater mean serum glucose concentrations than did boars. Throughout the longitudinal study, mean serum total bilirubin concentrations were similar for females and males, with no age related variations.
