Abstract

Early childhood is marked by routines and rituals. Starting at birth, parents and caregivers organize and structure children’s environments with routines such as feeding, sleep, and social activities that foster developmental outcomes in socioemotional and language development, including self-regulation, literacy, and responsibility. Rituals are regular events that foster shared meaning and family unity. There are several cultural variations across routines and rituals that are associated with unique child outcomes. These patterns of family interaction are crucial for childhood development.
