Abstract

Sponsored by the Highway Pavements Committee of the Roadway Council of the Transportation and Development Institute of ASCE The idea of utilizing waste plastics in the construction of asphalt pavements, also referred to as "flexible pavements," has been a major topic of discussion in the global conversation regarding the reduction of global environmental impacts from waste plastics. Pilot studies with initial data regarding this area of study are now emerging. Roadmap for Repurposing Waste Plastics in Asphalt Mixes provides a brief overview and summary of recent findings from studies observing treated and untreated waste plastics in asphalt mixtures and pavements. Topics include • Basic definition of waste plastics; • Chemical and rheological evaluations of waste plastic modified binders; • Future life cycle assessments; and • Gaps of knowledge, challenges, and recommendations for future study. This report represents a starting point in compiling, discussing, and analyzing early data on waste plastics in asphalt pavements, which can inform policy makers, industrial professionals, and researchers on next steps regarding the direction of future research, policy, and procedures.
