Abstract

Ancient applications where masonry has been used as a structural material are given ranging from Babylon to Renaissance Europe, China and the Americas. The evolution of structural masonry in the United States is then contrasted with these magnificent constructions which serves as a preface to a discussion on the return of masonry as a structural material. Development of rational masonry building code specifications is outlined, and present and future applications of structural masonry are presented.
