Abstract
We present a queuing theoretic model of a rectangular warehouse with a multi-vehicle material handling system to study the effect of warehouse design on the response time. The response time of the material handling system is shown to decrease with districting of the warehouse into service zones. An iterative procedure is presented for districting and optimal locations of input/output points. The effect of the rate of arrival of calls on optimal door location is shown to be significant.
