Abstract
The respiratory tract is a complex organ system both macroscopically and microscopically, with many different functions and cell types localized throughout the nasopharyngeal, laryngeal, tracheobronchial, and pulmonary segments. Exposure to xenobiotics occurs via inhalation and via the blood following ingestion, dermal exposure, or parenteral administration. Xenobiotics include particles of various sizes and solubilities, gases, and plant and synthetic toxins, thus dosimetry and site of injury are critical in understanding the response to injury. In addition, species, sex, health, and age differences must be considered in interpretation of data to be used in risk assessment. This chapter offers an extensive review and update of respiratory system structure, function, and cell biology; and discusses testing for, mechanisms of, and responses to toxicities of various etiologies.
