Resource-aware configuration of ubiquitous multimedia services

Abstract

Emerging ubiquitous multimedia services are expected to be available anytime, anywhere, and using different computing devices. In this paper, we present 2KQ, an architecture that enables such a dynamic and customized delivery of multimedia services. In 2KQ, a multimedia service can be delivered by multiple service configurations, each of which involves a different set of service components. For each client, the appropriate service configuration is chosen based on the current end-to-end resource availability. We have implemented a prototype of 2KQ as part of the 2K operating system. As a proof-of-concept, we have also built a video streaming service on top of 2KQ. Our experiments show the soundness of 2KQ.
