Reliability of controlled structures subject to real parameter uncertainties

Abstract

This paper presents a systematic and probabilistically consistent approach for determining the likelihood that instability will result from the uncertainty inherently present in a controlled structure. The formulation employs the Hurwitz determinants to characterize the stability of the system. A single degree-of-freedom structure with a delayed controller is investigated to illustrate the methodology. Second order reliability methods are used to calculate the probability of instability for both ideal and phase corrected control strategies.
