Xun Yan, Jason Fan

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

This chapter introduces the concept of reliability in language testing research and practice. It provides a non-technical discussion of (1) conceptualizations of reliability in relation to the interpretation of test scores, (2) operationalizations of reliability for both selected- and constructed-response items, (3) factors influencing reliability for both standardized tests and classroom-based assessments, and (4) relationship between reliability and validity. This chapter is also intended to complement the introduction to different measurement theories applied to testing language proficiency presented in the remaining chapters of this section.
