Abstract
In preparation for the 1999 Spring Operational Period (SOP99), the Sequential Single-Doppler Parameter Retrieval (SSDPR)-based initialization procedure was tested in near real-time on a number of convective cases this past winter. As part of the test, a comparison of model forecasts with and without the single-Doppler retrieved fields was made. The results show the improvement in short-term predictive skill that can be realized by initializing regions of ongoing convection with single-Doppler retrieved fields.
