Abstract

This paper describes the development and implementation of a rapid and accurate nondestructive testing (NDT) approach to inspect large areas of concrete bridge deck structures. Enhanced bridge deck inspection capability is enabled using a contactless acoustic impact-echo scanning system. Following an introduction to the impact-echo method and air-coupled sensing, the developed testing prototype is described. The obtained data are presented in the form of 3-dimensional "cloud" images and 2-dimensionsal peak frequency plot images, which together indicate the location and characteristics of delamination defects. NDT data images are obtained from full-scale bridge deck samples. These successful test results demonstrate the viability of the proposed approach.
