Abstract
We present field- and temperature-dependent Raman scattering results from Ca3Ru2O7 for applied field orientation H o∥(hard) b-axis. Our study reveals a field-induced orbital-ordered (OO) to orbital-disordered (OD) quantum phase transition, which is instigated in part by the strong spin-orbit coupling in this material. This study shows that dramatic magnetic field effects are most prevalent in a regime characterized by "mixed" magnetic and orbital phases (OD), providing further evidence for the strong connection between intrinsic phase inhomogeneity and "colossal" behavior in complex materials.
