Racial Inequality in Education: Race, Gender and Class

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

The article traces the growth of mainstream and radical theories of race in education. It argues for a greater focus on theorizing the intersection of race, gender and class. A new theoretical framework is offered for appropriating racial dynamics in schooling—a nonsynchronous theory of racial encounter between minorities and dominant whites in education and society that places emphasis on understanding the contradictory interests, needs and desires that cut across the apparent homogeneity of socially embattled minority and majority groups.
