Abstract

This paper examines the patronage of the court equerry Georg Engelhard von Loehneyss first by the Saxon Elector August and then by Duke Heinrich Julius of Braunschweig-Lüneburg, presents the printing history of his immensely successful equestrian work Della Cavalleria, and analyzes in detail his Hamburg pageant in 1603 for the homage of King Christian IV of Denmark, which constituted the first emblematic pageant in Northern Germany and Scandinavia.
