Abstract

A line from the recent movie Crimson Tide nicely captures one of the sad ironies of public journalism. A gruff Gene Hackman, playing a submarine officer, reminds Denzel Washington, an idealistic and potentially insubordinate junior officer, of the important difference between what they do and how they do it: "We are here to preserve democracy, not to practice it."
