Abstract
The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) was one of six sites awarded a four-year federally funded grant in 1994 under the first phase of the Digital Library Initiative (DLI). The DLI grants, jointly funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA), and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), were awarded, in addition to UIUC, to Stanford University, the University of California at Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon University, the University of California at Santa Barbara, and the University of Michigan. A detailed description of the Illinois DLI project, along with links to the other five projects, can be found at h t t p : // dli.grainger.uiuc.edu/ and is described in Schatz et al. (1999) and Schatz etal. (1996).
