Abstract

In this work, the tensile, flexure and impact properties of two-dimensional (woven) and unidirectional, alkali-treated fique (Furcraea macrophylla) reinforced potassium geopolymer composite was measured according to ASTM standards. Fique geopolymer composites withstood 13.9 MPa in tension, 11.4 MPa in flexure and absorbed 9.39 J of energy on impact. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was used to study the behavior of fique fibers and the composite at high temperatures. X-ray diffraction (XRD) was used to confirm the formation of geopolymer and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) were used to examine the fiber-matrix interface.
