Photonic transitions can induce non-reciprocity and effective gauge field for photons

Abstract

We show that the phase of a dynamic refractive index modulation induces a gauge transformation of the photon wavefunction. This effect can be used to induce non-reciprocity, and to achieve an effective gauge field for photons.
