Abstract
Photonic crystal surfaces provide a wide range of functions that are useful for the detection of biological analytes. Label-free detection, label-free imaging, and enhancement of fluorescence assays take advantage of the ability of periodic surface structures with high refractive index contrast to strongly confine light to a surface, where it can interact with biomaterials in a variety of ways. Applications in pharmaceutical research, disease diagnostics, cell biology, and genomics are all actively being pursued.
