Abstract
This text, originally presented as the opening conference of the XV Encontro Anual da Abem (The XV Annual Meeting of the Brazilian Association of Music Education – Abem), discusses several aspects of qualitative research in music education. The main characteristics of qualitative research, the intellectual roots of qualitative methodology, reality concepts, research genres and ethics are discussed. The presentation of qualitative research methods in music education includes North American examples of qualitative research accomplished with specialist and generalist teachers. The text also presents the path of qualitative research in music education over the last 25 years in the USA.
