Periodic vacuums and functional integrals: A toy model

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

We examine the role of total divergences added to the action in a quantum-mechanical path integral and show how they produce the Bloch waves without any need for semiclassical approximations. As a by-product we recover some of the properties of the statistical mechanics of the classical sine-Gordon system and the curious properties of the one-dimensional Coulomb gas in an external electric field.
