title = "Patterns of local displacements in shear bands in sands",
abstract = "This research has analyzed local displacement and strain characteristics associated with shear band growth and evolution in sands. Strains were evaluated from image-based displacement data derived from digital images of sand behavior captured nearly continuously throughout plane strain testing. Shear and rotational strain components were computed from the thousands of displacement data points across a specimen, spaced at about the grain scale. Shear and rotational strain magnitudes were found to vary along the length of the shear bands: zones of high shear were positioned periodically along the band axis and corresponded to regions of low rotation, and vice versa. Peaks in displacement components normal to the band axis were observed to occur between the alternating high shear and high rotation zones. These patterns strongly support the notion of alternating buildup and collapse of {"}force chains{"} as characteristic of steady state sliding.",
